Care & Maintenance For The Aging Motorcycle

Since we’ve got a week-long trip coming up where we’ll be on the road all but one day, it’s time to start doing just a bit of checking and maintenance.  Our K1200LT is a 2002 model with 59,617 miles on her.  She seems to be coming into her prime about now.

I found a neat little trick about rejuvenating the preload adjuster for the rear shock on that is really pretty easy to do.  It takes a minimum of tools and effort, time and just a little oil.  I use hydraulic jack oil.  I have no idea where the oil goes but topping it off makes a real difference.  The first time I did this I had added quite a bit of oil.  This is the third time I’ve done this now and have added less oil each time.  I know it works for K1200LT, GT and the GS series of BMW motorcycles and probably works on more.  Take a look at the directions here and you’ll notice if it will work on yours too.
